Favourite travel experiences of the week #6

Yes, we know we have missed a week on our favourite travel experiences of the week!

We have been busy – very busy.  Besides, after writing about our childhood dream of visiting the mythical islands of Pukapuka in our last blog post we have struggled to emerge from a permanent state of daydreaming. We need to get out to those beautiful Pacific islands dammit!

But that’s another day.  For now, we have found 3 great stories from planet web that just about make you want to stop reading this (tremendous) blog, get a taxi to the airport and jet off to one of these fine destinations tonight.

So here are our best travel stories of the week, in no particular order:

1) Turtle Swimming in Honduras – a lovely video showing us the delights of scuba diving on the tropical reefs in Central America

2) We are a bit late on this one, but we loved the images and sense of adventure behind this blog for hiking in Italy. So much so, we might just go this Summer.

3) Have you been to India?  Been to Mysore?  Well we haven’t but we might just now after seeing these great photos.

A wonderful looking palace in Mysore, India!

Pukapuka: A dream we had forgotten about

Have you heard of Pukapuka?

Probably not.  It’s listed as a coral atoll in the Cook Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Wiki states that it ‘is a triangular atoll with three islets comprising little more than 3 square kilometres of land area’.

So, it’s very small.

In terms of images, there aren’t many. But what you do see is pretty much what get – a very small tropical island surrounded by a very large ocean.

Ah what a wonder to visit

So, why are we talking about Pukapuka? Is it because one of our intrepid researchers has been out there and has some golden nuggets of information for you?  Or is it the best romantic hot spot since the Seychelles or the Maldives?

No – it’s a much more simple tale.

When I was 12 years old and in middle school I had a pretty tight group of 5 friends.  One day we were in class, bored and in search of adventure and we found ourselves looking at the globe which was sitting on the bookshelf.  We looked at the different countries around the world and began to find cool places that we could all go to when we were older – “like really old… like 25 or something!”.

We started spinning the globe with our eyes shut and randomly stopping it with one finger. I can’t really remember how many times we spun that globe, but i remember my finger started to ache.  Repeatedly underwhelmed, we struggled to come up with anything good, landing mostly on oceans. But finally, with one last spin, I opened my eyes to find my (now throbbing) pinky pointing straight into the middle of the Pacific Ocean on top of the mysterious island named Pukapuka!  That was it. Decision made.  ’When we were all 25, all 5 of us were going’ to take that trip out to the exotic, adventure island of Pukapuka and…. well, we weren’t really sure.  But we were definitely going to go together before we were 26…. we were basically already on our way!

But, fast forward about 18 years (and 5 years too late) I am sorry to say I still have not been or experienced what the exotic and unknown land of Pukapuka has to offer. It remains a beautiful mystery! Well mostly – thanks to the internet I have seen a few images and descriptions and it still looks amazing, even if a little windy.

So, 30 going on 13 Pukapuka is most definitely still on my list! It’s name still gets me and there is 18 years of history pointing me in its direction…

I just have to find those 5 ‘bestest’ friends and i’ll be on my way!

Best Online Travel Maps

Wikipedia lists ‘a Map‘ as ‘visual representation of an area – a symbolic depiction highlighting relationships between elements of that space such as objects, regions and themes’.

Which, as literal descriptions go, is not far off the mark.

But, while uncle Wiki goes on to talk about ‘Scale and accuracy’ and ‘labeling’, we want to talk about how maps can make you feel. The emotional aspects, the enigmatic pull of an unknown terrain, the real ins and outs, the joy of spending time engrossed in a good ol’mapping session.  We have to say, unashamedly, and most definitely loud and proud – we can’t live without maps!

Our beautiful models showing off this season's must have maps!

So how often do we map? More than you think!

It usually goes something like this – someone comes back from a great trip abroad, sits you down and recalls the fantastic time they have just had in ‘a beautiful, charming little place’, listing of 1 or 2 exciting things they did, and ending with ‘you really must go’.  One or two words strike a chord in amongst the fog of standard feedback like the “incredible view” and “it’s so much better if you turn up and book on the day”.

So, you immediately go online to find out more about the place, and after looking at a few photos and videos, you have to admit, it does look great.

Now comes the most important bit – the map – whether it be a simple one, like you find in a Lonely Planet guide book, or something more substantial like Google Maps, you start to investigate the area. And then, slowly but surely, your first tentative routes, just in case you were to venture to this new unknown area of the world, begin to emerge.

Soon your map search gets a little more specific; you look at the hotels, reviews: which are located in the best areas? Which has the best write-up? Is breakfast included? Then you are suddenly planning your days – what can you get round in 8 hours?  What’s the best itinerary for a day of walking?  How far can i get with 3 hours of a hire car? And what’s this – a natural hot spring on the way? Ah lovely, let’s check it out!

A very cool Map on the ceiling of an underground shopping centre in Russia

We could go on for hours and hours and hours about our love of maps (and maybe we will one day).  But for now, we have waded around in the deep end of the web and discovered some great ideas around how you can not only use a map to improve your time abroad, but help you make the right decision about where you are going on your next holiday.  Just don’t look at these while you are at work or need to hand in an essay…

These are all authentic time killers.

Great Maps:

1) World Map of Touristyness – Want to avoid the hordes? Discover something new?  This great idea for a map shows where people head for their holidays!

2) Want to see Paris up close and personal?  It’s been out for a while but never fails to impress, the Paris 26 Gigapixels interactive map. Also available in, strangely, Dresden, Germany.

3) Go360 Edinburgh Map is a fun way to discover the city and works very similar to Google street view.  Great ideas if you are spending some time in the Scottish capital.

4) Got loads of photos from your trips? Panoramio allows you to organise and display your photos on your own global map. Now you can see what Puka Puka really looks like.

Have you seen a great map and want to share it? We will leave the comments open for this one

Favourite travel experiences of the week #5

We have three great travel experiences for you this week, which give you adventure in big measures.  These stories have come from some of our favourite travel blogs and we recommend if you have a spare half an hour to check out what else they are saying.

So here is our best travel stories of the week:

1) Want some ideas about what to do on a trip to New Zealand? Dave Lee recently wrote about his amazing trip through the North and South Islands and provided his top 5 highlights.  Our favourite is, rather lamely, the go-karts!

2) Thinking about going on a trip with your girlfriend/partner around the world? If so, this chunky blog could give you some great ideas.  We enjoyed their stories from India.

3) Volcano Boarding in León.  Now that looks like serious fun on Volcano Cerro Negro.  Great video.

Until next time!

Rome – a unique culinary experience

We at Not Just a Holiday promote holidays that add excitement; that give you a sense of adventure and push the boundaries.  We also very much love showing you around places that are very familiar to the tourist trail, but focusing on a particular experience or activity.  In Rome, that could only ever be one thing. Eating.

We have just come back from Rome and we ate and ate and ate.  All in the name of research.

So what did we find? Well, you will have to wait for our full Rome profile on http://www.notjustaholiday.com for a full list of our recommendations (after being helped by our very hospitable Roman host).  However, we had to get a few places of our chest, just in case you are heading over that way in the next couple of weeks.  Here are 3 of our top food destinations to visit whilst visiting Rome.  Buon appetito!

1) Gelato Della Palma
Firstly the choice of flavours was incredible (including champagne, cucumber and a homage to the Kinder Surprise), but secondly and most importantly each type of ice cream we tried was awesome – the taste and texture were “oh my god this is unbelievable” good.

2) Pizza Forum
A Neapolitan pizzeria, which is around 5 minutes from the Coliseum.  It’s got great low prices and is set amongst a line of similar priced restaurants.  The restaurant decor doesn’t look flashy, but the pizza is superb and has a fiercely loyal local following.

Pizza Forum - lovely!

3) Freni e frizioni
In Trastevere on Via del Politeama, a popular neighbourhood  for Italians in the know, offer fantastic drinks and the bonus of all you can eat aperitifs while you are there.
