Favourite travel experiences of the week #17

Berlin

Well this is embarrassing…

Our favourite travel experiences of the week have been missing for one whole month.  Although the team have been busy on our Twitter page, there hasn’t been a lot going on Our Holiday Diary. So what can we do to redeem ourselves?  Well, the first thing we can do is round up the best of last months travel experiences from around the world for you to read, watch and enjoy!

So, without further ado, we present our 10 favourite travel stories and features, as well as our newest feature of showcasing our holiday of the week:

1) 36 Hours in Long Beach, California doesn’t sound too bad does it? The New York Times kick us off in style.

2) Berlin double header this week.  First comes a great Berlin Food: Favorite Neighborhood Meals Under €10.

3) Berlin has been one of ‘the’ city destinations to go to in Europe for some time.  This feature from the Guardian gives great ideas for a walking tour.

4) Some really great ideas for a foody holiday. Rustic Italy: places to stay for food lovers.

5) Great, great, GREAT skiing video showing off some amazing ‘urban skiing‘.

6) 10 of the world’s unsung places from the Lonely Planet.

7) A little bit closer to Not Just a Holiday HQ, some nice ideas for Spring walks around London.

8) Deep inside Kenya’s underground reggae scene – a virtually unknown music community.

9) Matthew Williamson, the fashion designer, on his 15-year love affair with India.

10) Under the water in the Antartica. Another great video on Vimeo. Beautiful.

Holiday of the Week

Luce d’Alma Resort & Spa

Recent winner of a TripAdvisor award, the Luce d’Alma Resort & Spa in the Gili Islands is a fantastic option for a luxury pampering trip with a real touch of exotic luxury.  The hotel boasts a cute swimming pool, has sixteen large contemporary furnished cottages with king size beds.  As well as that there is a modern fitness area and spa facilities with jacuzzi and sauna.  And the best bit? A private peach with some great snorkelling. A stunning location.

Favourite travel experiences of the week #13

So let’s get it over with.

The clocks have gone back and it’s getting dark and cold.  It’s not going to get much better for the next four months and it’s suddenly got very hard to get out of bed in the morning.

Not our favourite time of the year here at Not Just a Holiday Towers.

But at least we have the internet to cheer us up.  And cheer us up it has, with loads of fun travel stories, fantastic looking trips and some wonderful holiday diaries that we have been really getting in to!  The week, for us, has been taken over by the Wanderlust Travel Awards, which invites readers to ‘rate their travels of the past year’.  We love these kind of awards and we have been typing away working on our answers in the office, hoping that one of us is lucky enough to win the lovely looking prize.

We have also been looking at our favourite travel websites and we have found some cracking stories to cover this week, showcasing great photography, a lovely looking trip to India and a wonderful video from New York.  Enjoy!

So, in no particular order, check out our best travel stories and features of the week:

1)  Want to know how your caveman ancestors ate? No, OK fair enough, but there is a fun new restaurant in Berlin where you can eat and dine like one. They serve ‘organic, unprocessed fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, and herbs.’  We will go as long as you can shout “Wilma!” when you want your food.

2) We are really getting into the New York Time’s 36 hours in series, and we thought the latest Cape Town special was great!  Some excellent tips for dining and wining.

New York, New York - we enjoyed the video

3) Matador Network showcased a cool video from New York, showing off everyday city life to a backdrop of a ‘street drummer banging on buckets’.   Nicely done and some interesting looking characters.

4) Oh, what a view!  The Guardian Travel team present a truly scenic way to stay in India in Kerala and the Western Ghats.

5) Whilst we are on the Guardian website, they have a great new feature showcasing a year in Tokyo, with some gorgeous photos  from Paul Church’s blog.

Favourite travel experiences of the week #6

Yes, we know we have missed a week on our favourite travel experiences of the week!

We have been busy – very busy.  Besides, after writing about our childhood dream of visiting the mythical islands of Pukapuka in our last blog post we have struggled to emerge from a permanent state of daydreaming. We need to get out to those beautiful Pacific islands dammit!

But that’s another day.  For now, we have found 3 great stories from planet web that just about make you want to stop reading this (tremendous) blog, get a taxi to the airport and jet off to one of these fine destinations tonight.

So here are our best travel stories of the week, in no particular order:

1) Turtle Swimming in Honduras – a lovely video showing us the delights of scuba diving on the tropical reefs in Central America

2) We are a bit late on this one, but we loved the images and sense of adventure behind this blog for hiking in Italy. So much so, we might just go this Summer.

3) Have you been to India?  Been to Mysore?  Well we haven’t but we might just now after seeing these great photos.

A wonderful looking palace in Mysore, India!

We have three great travel experiences for you this week, which give you adventure in big measures.  These stories have come from some of our favourite travel blogs and we recommend if you have a spare half an hour to check out what else they are saying.

So here is our best travel stories of the week:

1) Want some ideas about what to do on a trip to New Zealand? Dave Lee recently wrote about his amazing trip through the North and South Islands and provided his top 5 highlights.  Our favourite is, rather lamely, the go-karts!

2) Thinking about going on a trip with your girlfriend/partner around the world? If so, this chunky blog could give you some great ideas.  We enjoyed their stories from India.

3) Volcano Boarding in León.  Now that looks like serious fun on Volcano Cerro Negro.  Great video.

Until next time!

Welcome to our new feature on the Not Just a Holiday blog. A weekly round-up of the best of the web’s travel experiences brought to you in a delicious ‘best of’ round-up.

We will point you to the best travel stories and experiences out there, whether it be something completely different or a great bit of advice that could provide you with some fantastic information on a familiar travel location.

We obviously also want to hear from you as well so if you know something that you want to tell everyone about please send us your story and if it’s good enough we will feature it in our weekly round-up

So, without further ado, here are our experiences of the week:

1) Simon Perry after his epic 35,000km bicycle journey from Alaska to Ushuaia – a truly awe-inspiring journey that took in 12 countries. Big respect to Simon and his outstanding trip, which also funded a great charity cause.

2) Going for a meal in Beijing? Another tale of male daring/foolishness when ordering spicy food abroad. Good stuff from the Telegraph travel team.

3) Around India in 140 seconds.  Lovely video from the always excellent Almost Fearless team.  Emotive, interesting and beautiful.
